exercise –
read – it keeps the brain growing
get at least 8 hours of sleep each night –
(sleep between the 7th and 8th hour is when the body most benefits)

The Song Shenandoah

The melody of the song Shenandoah is one of the most memorable in
Western Folk Music. The song is American Traditional, by an
unknown composer from the romantic period of the 19th century,
and certainly was known to and traveled with the prairie pioneers.

Enjoy the song, and the music and joy of Charlie McCoy.

And as You Listen
to the song Shenandoah, try to imagine yourself being out on the prairie and feeling
a soft, gentle breeze. Seeing the mountains in the distance. Hearing the birds
call to one and other, and then seeing a prairie dog surface nearby. Imagine that the sun
has followed you all day. The wild flowers are gently swaying, and their colors are
rich and vibrant, as they have been everyday. And somehow the silence of the moment reminds you of a smooth flowing river that you crossed, and that others too will be crossing to reach the prairie. Then you see a buffalo and an elk. And as you look, just beyond the horizon you see something else moving, and then you realize that it is someone coming. You donât know who, but whoever they are, they will be a friend.

And when they reach you, there will be a smile and they will say,
âI thought I heard you singing a song.â

Grandpa Jones
Member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, famed banjo and âold timeâ country and gospel music singer, the affable Louis Marshall âGrandpaâ Jones (1913-1998) was born in the farming community of Niagara in Henderson Country, Kentucky. Grandpa spent his teenage years in Akron, Ohio, where he began singing country music on a local radio show. In 1935 Grandpa moved to Boston, Massachusetts, working at radio station WBZ (AM) where musician/songwriter Bradley Kincaid gave him the nickname "Grandpa" because of his early morning off-stage grumpiness. Grandpa liked the name and decided to create a stage persona based around it.
Known for his spry wit and humor, and vaudevillian style, Grandpa entertained audiences of all ages, was a member of the Grand Ole Opry, and a longtime favorite on the one of TVâs most popular shows, Hee Haw.
In 1978 Grandpa Jones was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and more of his life can be read in his autobiography, âEverybodyâs Grandpa: Fifty Years Behind The Mike.â

Helen Steiner Rice (1900 - 1981) was born in Lorain, Ohio and is a widely recognized writer of religious and inspirational poetry.
Mrs. Rice became a successful businesswoman and lecturer after her husband died in 1932, and found great joy in writing verse for a prominent greeting card company. Helenâs poems received wide exposure in the 1960âs and she became known as âAmericaâs inspirational poet laureate.â
Helen Steiner Riceâs books of inspirational poetry have now sold nearly seven million copies, and the Helen Steiner Rice Foundation continues her charitable work.

A Brief History of the Grand Ole Opry

The Grand Ole Opry began in Nashville, TN in 1925 and is one of the most famous shows in the world. Some of the greatest performers have appeared on the Opry, and each week the Opry is broadcast live on itsâ original radio station, WSM â 650 AM.

Lenny is a very special story â for it was inspired by a visit to a childrenâs hospital in New York, where on the third floor there is a real fire truck for the children to play on and enjoy. With the encouragement of Pat Lafontaine this story was then written.

October is Fire Prevention Month and the hope is that all families will take the time to review with all their children the rules of fire safety by reading and reviewing the material being offered by their local fire department and on the web sites of community and national Fire Organizations.

If the dog could talk â what are some of the safety rules that the dog would tell you about.

Some of the important fire safety rules.

In any emergency â the most important rule is to get out of the house immediately,
let your parents or baby sitter warn everyone else.

Never run or panic. Take nothing with you. Leave all toys, dolls and games where they are, and call 911 once you are out of the house and out of danger.

It is always the firefighters job to find out where the smoke, fire or smell of gas
is coming from.

Always keep a kitchen clean â and follow all kitchen and cooking safety rules.

Never leave the house with any candles burning or a space heater on.

Much of the story reflects many of the moments of Super Bowl XVI which was played between the Cincinnati Bengals and the San Francisco 49ers. The game received one of the highest TV ratings ever, is considered to be one of the most memorable games of the decade, and in that game Dan Ross of the Cincinnati Bengals set a Super Bowl record that has yet to be broken.
